A different way forward

You do not have to carry the whole week alone.

When the mind repeatedly returns to a painful past, or races ahead into an uncertain future, the body can remain braced for a moment that is not happening now.

Practice gives you a way to interrupt that pattern. Movement, breath and attention bring you back into direct contact with this moment, where choice becomes possible again.

This is not about forcing yourself to feel positive. It is about developing the capacity to notice, regulate and respond with greater steadiness.

Two sessions, two intentions

Meet the week differently.

Each session has its own character. Together, they create a rhythm of returning, restoring and moving forward with greater awareness.

Authentic Tai Chi:
The Present Moment

Move from uncertainty into presence.

Monday is a conscious return. Rather than allowing the past to keep shaping the body, or the future to keep drawing the mind away, you practise meeting what is here now.

  • Notice where worry, pressure or anticipation is held in the body.
  • Use grounded movement and breath to soften unnecessary effort.
  • Shift from feeling scattered towards a clearer internal centre.
  • Begin the week with intention, instead of being carried by reaction.
“The path is not somewhere ahead of you. It begins beneath your feet.”

Centering:
Harmony of Yin & Yang

Bring effort and ease back into relationship.

Wednesday brings together Tai Chi, Qigong and Daoist Meditation. The intention is coherence: allowing attention, feeling, breath and movement to work together rather than pulling in different directions.

  • Balance doing with being, strength with softness, and focus with receptivity.
  • Use Qigong to explore how energy, posture and attention influence one another.
  • Practise responding to change without losing your centre.
  • Carry greater awareness into conversations, decisions and everyday demands.
“Coherence begins when the body, the breath and the mind stop arguing with the moment.”

A real relationship with your practice

You can tell Dr Jar what you are working towards.

Members are welcome to email Dr Jar with their personal intentions for practice. You might be seeking greater steadiness, a clearer routine, more confidence in a movement, a way to work with tension, or support returning after time away.

Dr Jar will personally review your practice intentions, then provide private practice notes inside your individual member area. These notes will help you understand what to return to and how the wider Apex Tai Chi practices may support your direction.

Private to you. Personal notes are placed within your protected member space and are not shared with the general membership.

Scientific research

An ancient practice, examined through modern research.

Tai Chi and Qigong are increasingly studied as mind-body practices. Research does not prove that one class will create the same result for everyone, and it does not clinically validate this specific Apex Tai Chi programme. It does, however, provide credible evidence for exploring regular practice.

Balance and physical function

Research across randomised trials reports improvements in balance and fall-related outcomes among older adults.

A 2023 meta-analysis included 24 randomised controlled trials and reported improvements in balance measures and reduced fall risk.

Cognitive and physical function

Regular Tai Chi and Qigong practice has been associated with modest benefits for both cognitive and physical function.

A 2023 review of 17 randomised studies involving 2,365 older adults found significant effects in both areas.

Psychological wellbeing

Reviews suggest possible benefits for stress, anxiety, mood and psychological wellbeing, while calling for stronger trials.

A systematic review of Tai Chi studies reported positive associations, but also highlighted variation in study quality and design.

Autonomic regulation

Heart-rate variability research offers a possible physiological lens on how mindful movement and breathing may influence regulation.

A review of 11 randomised trials found positive changes in some measures, with mixed active-control results and a need for more robust research.

Apex Tai Chi supports education, movement and wellbeing. It does not replace medical diagnosis, treatment, physiotherapy or mental-health care. Individual experiences vary.

Why these practices matter

The tools are ancient.
The reasons are entirely current.

When life changes quickly

Practise staying connected to your centre while circumstances, plans and expectations move around you.

When the mind will not settle

Give attention a physical pathway back through the feet, posture, breath and deliberate movement.

When effort has become tension

Learn to distinguish useful effort from habitual holding, then explore how less force can create more effective movement.

When you need to begin again

Return without judgement. One breath, one movement and one attentive moment can become the next step on the path.
